Unmissable Crank: High Voltage clip

We’ve got our hands on some video that demonstrates why Crank: High Voltage should be on your must-see list this year.

If the adjacent image doesn’t convince you that we’re right, just watch the clip. It features Statham jumpstarting himself by connecting a car battery to his tongue.

‘nuff said, really.

9 Amazing New Star Trek Shots

Today has been a great day for Trekkers.

Not only have Paramount asked the writers of JJ’s reboot to scribe a sequel – a sign of confidence if ever we saw one – but now a Enterprise-load of ace new trading card pics have hit the net.

And one of them’s a Slave Girl.

Orion Slave Girls go back to the original pilot of the original series, and were one of the many alien species that Captain Kirk (William Shatner) took to his space-bed.

If they’re in, it’s a sign that Chris Pine could be continuing TV Kirk’s womanising ways. You know, in between exploding Romulan spaceships.

Click through the feature to see the pictures – including Spock giving the Vulcan salute to himself – or head for the gallery to your right.

Star Trek sequel script underway

Despite the fact that the first film hasn’t even, er, opened yet, Paramount is already making plans for another Star Trek adventure.

It’s not really a surprise given that A) the franchise is possibly its biggest money-spinner and B) committing to have a script written doesn’t mean they’ll make the movie.

Still, it’s a sign of commitment to JJ Abrams and his team, three of which – Star Trek (trailer here) writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and producer Damon Lindelof – are attached to write the second movie.

While Abrams has not committed to direct any sequel, he’ll obviously get first refusal on the job. And though the screenplay is still at the very early story stage, the aim is to have it delivered to Paramount for Christmas, with a summer 2011 release slot.

"There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet," Lindelof told Variety. "But we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."

And there’s no word yet on exactly what we’ll see.

"Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do."

Given that Lindelof is the producer of Lost, expect Star Trek’s sequel to get twisty. Although given the first movie’s plot involves – spoiler alert – time twists, maybe that’s a moot point…

Star Trek sequel, then… Too soon? Or exciting news?

Emily Browning added to Sucker Punch

Emily Browning has been picked to head up the cast of Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, where she’ll replace Amanda Seyfried, who had to drop out due to scheduling issues.

The actress - seen in Lemony Snicket and The Uninvited - is joining the likes of Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Emma Stone and Evan Rachel Wood in the fantasy action drama.

Penned by Snyder and Steve Shibya, Punch sees a girl (Seyfried) confined to a mental institution who finds her safety under threat.

To protect herself, she creates an alternative reality, which Snyder is constantly describing as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns.”

With his cast finally slotting into place, Snyder can keep pre-production rolling for a planned September shoot.

Glad that Sucker will get its punch? Or worried in this post-Watchmen world? Tell us…

Samantha Darko: Sequel Or Remake?

S. Darko will be begrudgingly released on DVD at the end of April.

Having kept a close gawp on the Donnie Darko sequel we’re still not completely sure what it is. Is it a straight follow-up, or a weird re-imagining?

All signs pointed to sequel when the film was first proclaimed. The plot picks up seven years after the original flick, with Donnie’s little sis, now aged 18, deciding to go on a road trip with one of her pals. A bloke in a rabbit suit shows up, the rest is history.

But having seen the poster and the trailer, we’re starting to think this thing has to be a remake. Either that or the filmmakers are totally bereft of original ideas. Click through our feature and decide for yourselves…

We’ll start with the posters. Donnie’s at the top, Samantha’s at the bottom. As you can see, all the S. Darko marketing team seem to have done is slap Samantha on the original poster, deleted the old cast, stretched the rabbit, adjusted the colours a bit, pinned it up on the wall and said:

"It might look pretty much exactly the same, but don’t worry, no one will notice. Donnie Darko fans are all stoners, and most stoners wouldn’t notice if you shaved their heads in the night and painted their faces green. It’ll be fine." This seems to be a logic they’ve applied to the film, too.

So, in the original Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the middle of nowhere. His sister Samantha (Daveigh Chase) wakes up in the middle of nowhere in the new one, too.

"So what," say our imaginary filmmakers. "People wake up outside all the time! Especially teenagers, they love it! And, we’re not sure if you got this, but Donnie and Samantha are related, it’s practically in their genetics to wake up outside!"

Yeah, the bunny’s back too. Even though he was totally and completely specific to Donnie. Although this time his teeth are even more jaggedy. So, that’s okay then. Totally different, fresh and original.

We wonder if he speaks to Samantha in the same weird underwater voice. We bet he doesn’t. He probably speaks like he’s been inhaling helium, or does Daffy Duck impressions or something. The makers of S. Darko have way too much pride to rip that element off. Because it would absolutely make no sense.

Remember the plane crash in Richard Kelly’s original? Well, new director Chris Fisher seems to enjoy things falling from the sky, too. "C’mon, guys," our imaginary filmmakers whine. "All films have explosions and stuff in them. Especially sequels."

"Oh, and countdowns, all sequels have countdowns. It makes them more exciting." Yep, like her older brother before her, Samantha is up against a very specific deadline. But, put it this way, we aren’t exactly counting the seconds until we can buy S. Darko from our local DVD emporium.

On top, you’ll see Grandma Death (Patience Cleveland) in a dress, near a car. Underneath Samantha Darko, in a dress, near a car. We’re sure this is a total coincidence. "Chicks love hanging around cars in dresses," say our pretend filmmakers. "Have you never been to a prom?"

Those wobbly wibbly worm things from the original? Totally back. And front. Samantha really does have a lot in common with her brother. We’ve never seen twins that are 7 years apart in age, but were pretty sure that’s the big twist of this film.

Whirly plumes of smoke around a wormhole. Atmospheric. Oh, this is definitely a remake. It’d be too serendipitous for two smoke machines to be switched on near a time-bending space holes at the same time in two separate films. The prosecution rests.

Kevin Macdonald directing Eagle Of The Ninth

State Of Play director Kevin Macdonald is going back to Roman times for his next film, signing up to direct The Eagle Of The Ninth.

The film finds a wounded Roman soldier and his loyal Celtic slave (Jamie Bell, below) who attempt to solve the mystery of the Ninth Legion.

Who are they? They would be a brigade of Roman soldiers who set off for the wild Scottish Highland hills 15 years before… And were never seen again.

Channing Tatum has been offered the role of the injured Roman, but he hasn’t yet decided if his accent’s up to the job. Sorry, that he’ll take the part.

If he signs, he’ll be off to shooting Hungary (doubling for Roman-occupied England) in August. Scotland, meanwhile, will be played by Scotland.

Seems England’s a little too built up to really serve Roman times.

And what is it with Romans, suddenly? Neil Marshall’s in production on Centurion and now this?

[Source: Variety]

Excited for more Roman action? Or is it all history? Speak up…

Bruno slapped with an NC-17

Whoops… Looks like some of Sacha Baron Cohen’s antics are a little too risqué for the notoriously staid MPAA across the pond: Bruno is rated NC-17.

The rating – which means many UA cinemas won’t carry the movie – is generally acknowledged to be a kiss of death for any movie.

But don’t expect that situation to stay for long. Universal is already planning to edit the film down to a more tolerable R rating, just as happened with Borat (below).

So what made the US ratings board froth and seethe? Seems it’s “a number of sexual sequences”.

Unrated DVD action ahoy!

Are you eager to see what Cohen has cooked up? Speak out!

Paul Bettany starring in Priest

Paul Bettany is hashing out a deal to star in vampire Western Priest.

Adapted from the TokyoPop comic book, the story is set in a world that has been torn apart by centuries of war between man and the fanged horrors.

Bettany will play a warrior priest whose speciality is taking on the undead gits – and who must rescue his niece from their foul clutches.

The movie will see him reunite with director Scott Stewart, who just worked with him on supernatural thriller Legion for Screen Gems, which is also producing Priest.

"I knew the moment I saw Stewart’s first cut of Legion that Bettany was Priest and so I mentioned it to him immediately," Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper tells The Hollywood Reporter.

First one to make a crack about “raising the stakes” gets a sock in the gullet.
