Hungry Rabbit gets another morsel

In a fairly last-minute piece of casting, Guy Pearce has signed up alongside Nicolas Cage and Mad Men’s January Jones to star in The Hungry Rabbit Jumps.

Not much has been revealed about the film, which begins its shoot in a few weeks in New Orleans, except that it sounds pretty dark.

It focuses on how Cage’s ordinary guy is drawn into a powerful underground vigilante organisation after his wife (Jones) falls victim to a violent crime and he seeks revenge.

Sounds as though this could see Cage laying down some vengeance in some pretty interesting ways - with Pearce as his evil nemesis, perhaps?

The film’s directed by Roger Donaldson - last seen pulling off The Bank Job in 2008, with the slightly classier Thirteen Days on his CV to balance things out - and its producer is none other than Tobey Maguire, who chose to stay behind the scenes rather than star.

We’re still not sure what that bunny’s doing, though, and why it’s hungry, but we’re sure that’ll all become clear.

So - Cage and Pearce in a gritty thriller. Float your boat? Let us know…

Ryan Reynolds talks Green Lantern

With its 2011 release date still frustratingly far off, news about comic book hero Green Lantern’s first foray into cinemas isn’t exactly pouring from the set… which makes the interview Ryan Reynolds recently gave to MTV all the more juicy.

Seems the actor’s pretty thrilled with the way things are working out on the film.

"This is a difficult industry to get anything made, let alone a passion project.

"So when you see people understand what your vision is and come aligned with that common goal, it’s pretty cool."

Reynolds - who’s also reprising his underused Wolverine character Deadpool this year, so he’s probably going to the gym in his sleep - also had some good things to say about Green Lantern director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale).

"I’ve known about Green Lantern my whole life, but I’ve never really followed it before.

"I fell in love with the character when I met with Martin Campbell. When I sat down with him, I really got what it is that this guy is all about.

"When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has balls of titanium, and the other part is that he’s slightly crazy, and you have to be to take on something with the scope of Green Lantern. He’s less of the director and more of a general."

Excited about Reynolds’ bid to take over the superhero stable over the next year and a half? Let us know below…

Jessica Alba lands another comic book adap

After headlining Sin City and The Fantastic Four, Alba’s just signed for The Insiders, the big-screen version of another comic series - this time one from, er, Belgium.

Okay, so the phrase ‘Belgian comic series’ isn’t exactly the sexiest selling point (no, not even when it’s Tintin), but there’s obviously something special about publisher Dargaud’s illustrated adventuring, seeing as Alba stumped up a big chunk of the money herself to buy the rights.

And the blurb certainly sounds interesting, with the film focusing on "Najah Cruz, a Columbian who is as deadly as she is beautiful.

She has the weapons expertise and combat skills of a James Bond.

At the secret request of the White House she infiltrates a worldwide mafia-like organisation composed of businessmen and politicians and becomes the bodyguard of the organisation’s leader.

Sounds a little Alias to us, although it’s hard to tell the direction the film will take - could it go dark and gritty, like the Bourne franchise, with Alba as a determined superspy who’ll crack heads to get what she wants?

Or will it ramp up the silly and make her some kind of high-kicking, ball-busting femme fatale who defies the laws of gravity and wears skimpy leather outfits?

We’ll let you ponder that one. Probably for a while.

However, with the action being helmed by Mabrouk el Mechri, last seen coaxing Jean Claude Van Damme’s Id onto the screen in odd ‘biopic’ JCVD, we’re thinking this could be better than it looks…

Looking forward to seeing Alba comic-up again? Tell us about it below!

Nicolas Cage lights up Bath

Nicolas Cage proved he’s not averse to mingling with us humble Britishers in the quaint old town of Bath Spa last night, turning on their Christmas lights in front of a crowd of thousands.

Cage, who owns a property in the city and also a nearby castle (as you do), was invited to do the deed by a hopeful local, who presumably had already checked with fellow Bath residents Johnny Depp and Van Morrison and discovered they’d gone bowling. Or something.

Not surprisingly, the town centre was brought to a standstill by Cage’s merry bit of Christmassing, with extra police drafted in to cover the event. He announced that he’d felt welcomed by the "wonderful and historic city".

"Anything that I can do to give back and say thanks, I am going to do," he declared, before pressing a button and ramping up Bath’s electricity bill.

More Thor news

As the Thor casting rumours rumble ever onwards - although with Chris Hemsworth playing the titular Norse warrior, at least we’re spared all that nonsense now - there’s one thing fans of the comic-book hero have been dying to learn: whether his alter-ego, Dr Donald Blake, will be appearing in the movie.

The partially disabled doctor was Thor’s Earthly persona after he lost his powers and was stranded here with no memory of who he was.

After a while, he came to realise that he could transform between the doctor and the god whenever he wanted. In the comics, his walking stick became his mighty hammer after he tapped it on the ground.

Thanks to a movie source having a little whisper in the ear of Ain’t It Cool News, however, it looks as though there’ll be no hammer-tapping for us.

The source has confirmed that most of the film’s action will be set on Earth rather than the lofty realms of Asgard, but in this treatment, Thor retains his powers and Blake isn’t needed.

Should the writers have gone with the comics, or do you trust their judgement on this big-screen reboot? Share your Thorts below (sorry…).

First pics from Dawn Treader

It’s over a year away from release and we’re not sure if its intended audience isn’t more interested in Twilight than Dawn, but for those who are interested, check out these pics from The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader.

With Andrew Adamson, the director of the first two films, taking a break after whipping up CS Lewis’s fantasy world with the help of those clever Weta folks, Michael Apted (The World Is Not Enough) has taken the helm for this third trip through the wardrobe.

Voyage Of The Dawn Treader sees Lucy (Georgia Henley) and Edmund Pevensie (Skandar Keynes) return to Narnia to find their cousin, teaming up with Ben Barnes’ Caspian for a sea voyage.

Check out wee little Lucy on the titular ship itself, although as Georgie Henley is now 14, she’s probably old enough to get her sailing license by now.

For more details, check out the film’s Facebook page.

Excited about another trip to Aslan country? Roar about it below…

Wes Craven returns for Scream 4?

The next installment of the Scream franchise is set to begin filming in April next year, and although stars of the first trilogy Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox have been confirmed to return, one ingredient has been missing - original director Wes Craven.

Craven has apparently been wating to see a finished script before signing on the dotted line, but in a recent interview, Neve Campbell has stated she is "pretty sure" he will return to direct the film.

The script is currently being written by Kevin Williamson, the man behind the first two installments of Scream (i.e. the good ones), so with his original cast and writer in place, the elements seem perfect for Wes to return to the helm.

The film will be set ten years later in Woodsboro, and is described as “an ensemble” which will introduce several new characters. Williamson has said that it will reference manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, PG-13 horror movies, vampire films, M. Night Shyamalan movies and even torture porn.

Are you looking forward to more Scream? Going to put your fingers in your ears and pretend it doesn’t exist? Let us know.

First Pic from Shrek Forever After!

Whether you were delirious or dismayed to discover yet more Shrek sequels were in production, chances are the ugly-Ogre-that-could will still rule the box office come opening weekend, and you’ll likely be seeing it.

The next installment is titled Shrek Forever After - get it? As in 4-ever - as in this is the fourth Shrek…

Anyway, along with the below picture, courtesy of Collider, which shows Shrek and the mischevious munchikin Rumplestiltskin, new plot details have emerged, and it all sounds a little It’s A Wonderful Life. Details below;

The loveable Scots-brogued Shrek, after getting married and having kids, is struggling with domestic existence.  He strikes a deal with the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin, and ends up seeing what the world would be like without him in it.

In the Shrek free world, Donkey has been forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trades his sword for a pink bow and the devious Rumpelstiltskin rules the kingdom.

New voices for the film include Kathy Griffin and Kristin Schaal voicing a pair of ogre-hunting witches and a resistance group led by Jon Hamm as, says director Mike Mitchell (Sky High), the best-looking ogre you’ve ever seen.

Well that hasn’t exactly got our knickers in a twist, but we do love Jon Hamm.

The trailer for Shrek Forever After is expected to premiere before screenings of Avatar this Christmas. The film is released July 9, 2010.

Shrek Forever After? Or do you also wish for a world without Shrek? Let us know your thoughts!
